Design Technology (DT)

The teaching and learning of DT links directly to our whole school curriculum intent.

The aim for Design technology at Little Digmoor is to encourage our children to use their imagination in order to be creative and innovative.  We want children to think critically when designing, planning and making products for a specific purpose. In addition, promoting value of evaluating products they have produced.  The subject relates extremely well to the real world where existing products are analysed so that their own needs and that of others can be considered in a range of different contexts through different disciplines.

Children are encouraged to take risks and be adaptive in order to achieve specific outcomes. Children will develop a critical understanding of how design technology is useful in everyday life and how it impacts the wider world.

Design technology projects all follow a similar structure to ensure the children have opportunities to learn and develop their practical skills whilst using a wide range of tools and equipment to meet the purpose of the task.

What is Kapow?

Kapow is a scheme of work that we use to support the teaching and learning of design technology. It has been devised by design technology specialists to provide lessons from early year through to year 6 therefore ensuring clear learning progression. The lessons are easily adapted to meet the needs of all children in our school.  Along with this, lessons are designed to provide fantastic cross-curricular links – allowing children to acquire a range of skills useful in other subjects too.

The scheme aims to develop children’s knowledge and skills across the following disciplines:

  • Cooking and nutrition
  • Textiles
  • Mechanical systems
  • Structures
  • Electrical systems
  • Digital World
