Geography

The teaching and learning of geography at Little Digmoor links directly to our whole school curriculum intent. Geography is taught from Year 1 to 6 and Understanding the World in EYFS.

Our primary geography curriculum is carefully crafted around the Oddizzi scheme, thoughtfully tailored to meet the unique needs and interests of our children. Our intent is to embed a deep understanding and appreciation of the world around us, instilling curiosity, empathy, and a sense of responsibility for our planet. Through enthusiastic teaching, digital resources and tailored lesson plans, we aim to inspire a lifelong love for geography while ensuring that learning experiences are engaging and accessible for all learners.

While recognizing the value of fieldwork in enhancing geographical understanding, we are committed to incorporating fieldwork experiences into our curriculum wherever possible. Fieldwork provides children with invaluable opportunities to apply their geographical knowledge in real-world contexts, develop essential fieldwork skills, and deepen their connection to the world around them. Through fieldwork, children have the chance to explore local environments, investigate geographical phenomena and engage with issues relevant to their own community. By integrating fieldwork into our curriculum, we aim to enrich the children’s learning experiences, create a sense of curiosity and wonder and nurture a deeper appreciation for the complexities of our planet.

Furthermore, we are passionate about the integration of debating into our curriculum, providing students with opportunities to critically engage with geographical issues, develop communication skills and explore diverse perspectives. Debating encourages students to think critically about complex geographical topics, develop their argumentation skills and consider the implications of human actions on the environment and society. By incorporating debating into our curriculum, we wish to empower our pupils to become confident, informed global citizens who can articulate their views thoughtfully and respectfully.
